Social Role Valorization

What is SRV?

Social Role Valorization (SRV) is a way of helping vulnerable and marginalized people have access to the good things in life that everyone wants and enjoys.

The center of SRV is valued social roles. They are a tool for creating better opportunities for people. With valued social roles, people are more likely to get the good things of life, such as being respected and treated fairly; making a contribution that others value; experiencing the places and opportunities that society offers; having friends and loved ones; and many more such things. Many people who are not valued by society do not get valued roles, and do not get these things.

SRV was developed by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger. He was a German-American professor. He first taught Normalization and then developed the theory of SRV out of Normalization.

SRV has influenced and guided people working in human services, education and advocacy since the 1980s, as well as family members of those who receive service. It has significantly impacted the way people with a disability, seniors, and other vulnerable communities are supported.

Learning about SRV, and valued social roles, takes time and practice. That is why we are bringing together a community of people who study and practice the theory of SRV in their work and lives, to discuss their work and learn from each other.

About the Event

This international conference is a valuable way to learn from one another. It gives professionals, people, and their families the opportunity to hear how others are using SRV and the impact it has had. During sessions, you will collect stories, information and tools for using SRV. The goal of the event is to share knowledge and experiences. With this in mind, we hope to inspire and build energy around the ways we can help people to enjoy the good things in life.
